President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Controversy Surrounding Aisha Yesufu's Criticisms

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's recent interaction with South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa during the latter’s inauguration event has been mired in controversy, largely due to the claims made by activist Aisha Yesufu. This situation underscores the importance of understanding diplomatic protocols and maintaining a sense of national pride and unity.

The allegations made by Aisha Yesufu regarding President Tinubu being disgraced by President Ramaphosa at the inauguration have sparked significant debate on social media platforms. Yesufu claimed that Tinubu was shunned and humiliated during the event. However, these allegations were swiftly refuted by patriotic Nigerians who criticized Yesufu and her supporters for spreading misinformation and fostering unnecessary pessimism.

The seating arrangements at such events are determined by established diplomatic protocols, which are designed to ensure order and respect among attending dignitaries. These protocols are based on the seniority of the presidents and their arrival times, rather than personal preferences or perceived slights.

Understanding Diplomatic Protocols. The seating arrangements and protocols at international events, such as presidential inaugurations, are meticulously planned and adhere to long-standing diplomatic customs. These arrangements take into account the tenure of the attending presidents and their arrival sequence. For example, at President Tinubu’s own inauguration, international dignitaries were seated according to similar protocols, which placed them in an order reflecting their seniority and arrival times.

Such protocols are in place to maintain order and respect among world leaders, ensuring that each dignitary is accorded the proper recognition based on their status and the traditions of international diplomacy. Misinterpreting these arrangements as a personal slight can lead to unnecessary controversies and misunderstandings.

In light of the controversy, Nigerians need to foster a sense of patriotism and unity. Political disagreements are natural in any democratic society, but they should not lead to the dissemination of misinformation or disrespect towards the office of the President. Constructive criticism should be based on facts and aimed at the betterment of the nation, rather than personal attacks or unfounded allegations.

Aisha Yesufu’s right to express her opinions is undisputed, but such expressions must be rooted in truth and respect for the protocols that govern international relations. Recognizing the sacrifices and efforts of President Tinubu in his role is important for national cohesion and the country's international reputation.

The controversy surrounding the seating arrangement at President Ramaphosa’s inauguration highlights the need for responsible discourse and a thorough understanding of diplomatic customs. Baseless allegations and misinformation can harm national unity and Nigeria’s standing on the global stage.

As Nigerians, our collective goal should be to support our leaders in their efforts to navigate the complex challenges facing the country, while engaging in constructive and fact-based criticism. By fostering a spirit of patriotism and unity, we can contribute to a more prosperous and cohesive future for our nation. Written by Daniel Okonkwo for Profile International Human Rights Advocate.

Their courage is not a favour but a duty fulfilled with sacrifice. Ensuring that such service is matched with fair and transparent career progression remains essential to institutional integrity and morale. A duly initiated upgrading exercise in 2015 raised the expectations of nearly two thousand educated police officers. Nearly a decade later, according to available accounts and officer testimonies, the process remains unresolved, even as their peers have advanced and reform discussions continue within the sector. In June 2015, the Nigeria Police Force issued an official wireless signal to officers across commands, inviting graduate Inspectors and rank and file personnel who had acquired un...

The Brekete Family Smart City Estate, an ambitious private-led housing project initiated by renowned broadcaster and activist Ahmed Isa, was conceived with that same vision: to deliver a modern, inclusive, and smart urban community for ordinary Nigerians. Yet, more than a decade after subscriptions began, the project remains largely undeveloped, raising persistent questions among subscribers: when will it finally be ready? Subscriptions for the Brekete Family Smart City Estate opened betwe...

Over 200 Nigerian politicians, governors, senators, security chiefs, senior civil servants, and other politically connected individuals have stashed at least $7 billion in Dubai properties across at least 1,824 traced assets, making Nigeria the second-largest source of foreign property buyers in Dubai after India By Daniel Nduka Okonkwo The $7 billion figure is drawn from three separate documented investigations spanning more than a decade. A 2012 report established that Nigerians had invested up to $6 billion in Dubai real estate over the preceding three years alone. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, drawing on the C4ADS Sandcastles property dataset, subsequently identified 800 Dubai properties linked to Nigerian politically exposed persons, valued at approximately $400 million as of 2020. By 2024, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project’s landmark Dubai Unlocked investigation, conducted with more than 70 international media partners, had traced that figure ...
