Senator Biodun Olujimi: From the Pen to the Senate—A Life of Purpose, Advocacy, and Representation

By Daniel Okonkwo

Her public service was marked by the effective delivery of essential support and programs aimed at uplifting entire communities, often through government-backed initiatives. It exemplified a deep commitment to the public good, grounded in the principles of efficiency, equity, and a strong dedication to improving the quality of life for all citizens.

Abiodun Christine Olujimi, born in Omuo-Ekiti, Ekiti State, stands as a symbol of bouncebackability, dedication, and public service. A seasoned journalist turned influential lawmaker, she has spent her life championing truth, transparency, and justice—first through the media, and later from the hallowed chambers of Nigeria’s Senate.

Senator Olujimi’s journey into public service began in the newsroom. With a Diploma in Journalism from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism obtained in 1976, she cut her teeth in the media industry at a time when journalism demanded grit, integrity, and persistence. Her career spanned notable media and communication institutions including the Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Posts and Telecommunication, Nigerian Television Authority, Reflex Concept, Delta Steel Company, and DBN Television, where she rose to become Manager from 1993 to 1997.

Through these platforms, she used her pen and voice as a weapon of advocacy, pushing for the marginalized and voicing the struggles of the common man. Her experience as a journalist shaped her deep appreciation for transparency, accountability, and good governance—values she carried into politics.

In November 2005, she was appointed Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, marking her formal entry into governance. From 2015 to 2023, Senator Olujimi represented Ekiti South Senatorial District at the Nigerian Senate. She rose to become the Minority Leader of the Senate, a role that placed her at the forefront of national policy-making, oversight, and legislative responsibility.

As a lawmaker, her contributions were deeply rooted in the principles of justice, fairness, and national development. Her legislative responsibilities—including making laws for peace, order, and good governance, scrutinizing public institutions, and confirming key presidential appointments—were executed with indefatigable commitment. Her tenure reflected the same investigative rigor and moral clarity that defined her journalistic career.

Olujimi’s academic achievements further reinforced her capacity for public service. In addition to her journalism diploma, she earned a degree in Political Science and a Postgraduate degree in Public Relations and Marketing from the University of Abuja—credentials that solidified her understanding of governance, public policy, and communication.

In January 2022, as the People's Democratic Party (PDP) prepared for the June 18 Ekiti Governorship election, Senator Olujimi declared her intent to run. However, she later withdrew from the race, citing significant irregularities. Speaking at the party’s primary accreditation venue at Pope John Paul II Pastoral Centre in Ado-Ekiti, she stated:

> “I have only pulled out of the race and not for any aspirant. My party has not been fair to me at all; I feel cheated by the ongoing situation.”

She alleged that the delegates' list had been tampered with to favor a particular camp, once again laying stress on her firm stance against injustice and political manipulation. Her withdrawal was a principled decision, reflecting her lifelong dedication to fairness, transparency, and ethical leadership.

Though the decision may have been personal or influenced by pressure, it reignited a broader conversation about the marginalization of women in Nigerian politics—a cause she has continually confronted with courage.

Whether in the newsroom or the Senate chamber, Senator Olujimi has consistently encompassed the highest ideals of public service. Her journey illustrates how journalism and politics—though different in execution—require similar virtues: truthfulness, courage, critical thinking, and a relentless pursuit of justice.

As a journalist, she championed transparency and gave voice to the voiceless. As a legislator, she fought for the enactment of laws and policies that would improve the lives of Nigerians, especially her constituents in Ekiti South. Her dual experience in the media and legislature makes her uniquely equipped to understand the importance of both informing the public and acting on their behalf.

Senator Abiodun Olujimi is not just a politician; she is a living demonstration of what is possible when passion meets purpose. Her story is one of transformation—from a media advocate to a national policymaker. It is a story of courage, integrity, and dedication to the ideals of democracy.

She is worthy of another chance to serve the people—not out of personal ambition, but as a gem who has produced one of Nigeria’s finest examples of dual excellence in both politics and journalism. Her wealth of experience, proven integrity, and unflinching commitment to justice continue to position her as an obeliscolychny of hope in Nigeria’s journey toward a more inclusive, accountable, and people-centered democracy.

As the country grapples with complex political and socio-economic challenges, leaders like Senator Biodun Olujimi—who have tested both the power of the pen and the weight of lawmaking—offer a clear and inspiring path forward.

A DECADE OF SILENCE: HOW NIGERIA’S POLICE FORCE LEFT APPROXIMATELY 1,850 GRADUATE OFFICERS IN A PROLONGED PROMOTION PROCESS EXCLUSIVE REPORT By Daniel Nduka Okonkwo Tonight, while the nation sleeps, heroes in uniform stand guard, our police officers, the living shield between chaos and safety. Their courage is not a favour but a duty fulfilled with sacrifice. Ensuring that such service is matched with fair and transparent career progression remains essential to institutional integrity and morale. A duly initiated upgrading exercise in 2015 raised the expectations of nearly two thousand educated police officers. Nearly a decade later, according to available accounts and officer testimonies, the process remains unresolved, even as their peers have advanced and reform discussions continue within the sector. In June 2015, the Nigeria Police Force issued an official wireless signal to officers across commands, inviting graduate Inspectors and rank and file personnel who had acquired un...

With Government Backing, Lingering Questions Remain: When Will Brekete Family Smart City Be Ready? By Daniel Nduka Okonkwo Real estate development, whether residential, commercial, or mixed-use, is rarely a simple undertaking. It demands structured planning, strict legal compliance, financial discipline, and consistent on-site execution. From land acquisition and project phasing to infrastructure delivery and final habitation, each stage must be carefully coordinated to translate vision into reality. The Brekete Family Smart City Estate, an ambitious private-led housing project initiated by renowned broadcaster and activist Ahmed Isa, was conceived with that same vision: to deliver a modern, inclusive, and smart urban community for ordinary Nigerians. Yet, more than a decade after subscriptions began, the project remains largely undeveloped, raising persistent questions among subscribers: when will it finally be ready? Subscriptions for the Brekete Family Smart City Estate opened betwe...

Over 200 Nigerian politicians, governors, senators, security chiefs, senior civil servants, and other politically connected individuals have stashed at least $7 billion in Dubai properties across at least 1,824 traced assets, making Nigeria the second-largest source of foreign property buyers in Dubai after India By Daniel Nduka Okonkwo The $7 billion figure is drawn from three separate documented investigations spanning more than a decade. A 2012 report established that Nigerians had invested up to $6 billion in Dubai real estate over the preceding three years alone. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, drawing on the C4ADS Sandcastles property dataset, subsequently identified 800 Dubai properties linked to Nigerian politically exposed persons, valued at approximately $400 million as of 2020. By 2024, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project’s landmark Dubai Unlocked investigation, conducted with more than 70 international media partners, had traced that figure ...
