 Committed to National Security and Revenue Generation: Celebrating the Achievements of the Nigeria Customs Service


In recent years, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has been of hope and a bastion of national security. Their exceptional performance in intercepting illicit goods, arms, and ammunition, coupled with their remarkable revenue generation, is nothing short of commendable. As a writer and a patriotic Nigerian, I feel compelled to highlight the phenomenal work being done by the NCS under the leadership of Comptroller-General Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.


Firstly, let it be clear that my admiration and praise for the NCS stem from their incredible dedication and professionalism. I have never met the Comptroller-General nor have I received any form of compensation for writing about their achievements. This is purely my way of acknowledging and appreciating their vital contributions to our nation.


The Nigeria Customs Service has been vital in saving countless Nigerian lives by intercepting explosives and deadly drugs that could have caused untold devastation. The recent commendation by the House Committee on Customs and Excise shows the importance of their work. The Chairman, Hon. Leke Abejide, praised the NCS for its outstanding revenue generation and notable seizures of arms and ammunition. These efforts are not just about revenue; they reflect a deep commitment to national security.


During an oversight visit to the NCS Headquarters in Abuja on July 10, 2024, Hon. Abejide lauded the service for its vigilance and effectiveness, particularly in operations at Onne Port, Rivers State, and Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos State. The commendation highlighted that every seizure of weapons and illicit items is a victory for Nigeria, potentially saving countless lives. The Chairman urged the NCS to maintain their efforts and assured them of the committee's support in scrutinizing and eradicating illegal activities within Bonded Terminals and Free Trade Zones.


In response, Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi expressed gratitude for the recognition from the House Committee, emphasizing the critical role of legislative oversight in ensuring the efficiency, transparency, and accountability of NCS operations. He reiterated the service’s commitment to legislative compliance and the implementation of directives to streamline processes, improve efficiency, and uphold the highest standards of integrity.


Deputy Comptroller-General Caroline Niagwan provided a detailed account of the NCS’s revenue achievements, revealing that the service generated 2.742 trillion naira in the first half of 2024, surpassing the expected revenue target. This impressive feat represents a 126.64 percent increase due to teamwork and effective measures to block revenue leakages. The introduction of the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) Programs has also facilitated trade by rewarding reliable and compliant traders.


Deputy Comptroller-General Bello Jibo highlighted the success of ‘Operation Whirlwind’ in making significant seizures of petroleum products and collaborating with the NNPC to enhance security operations. Additionally, Assistant-Comptroller General Kikelomo Adeola revealed ongoing capacity-building programs and advancements in Information and Communication Technology, including the development of an e-auction application.


The Nigeria Customs Service’s achievements are a testament to the dedication, professionalism, and hard work of its officers. Under the leadership of Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, the NCS has set a high standard in national security, revenue generation, and trade facilitation. Their efforts not only protect our borders but also contribute significantly to the nation's economic stability.


As a patriotic Nigerian, it is my honor to celebrate and acknowledge the Nigeria Customs Service. Their work has undoubtedly made our nation safer and more prosperous. Let us continue to support and commend these warriors for their incredible service to Nigeria, encouraging them to achieve even greater heights.
